Though the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the supreme court to re-investigate the post-Godhra riots, is geared up to arrest minister of state for higher education Maya Kodnani and former VHP leader Jaydeep Patel, questions are being raised over its ‘soft stand’ against the police officials responsible for the alleged negligence during the riots. Names of many senior police officers, including MK Tandon, the then joint commissioner of police (sector II); PB Gondia, the then deputy commissioner of police (zone IV); MM Mysorewala, the then police inspector at the Naroda police station; commissioner of police PC Pande and RJ Savani, DCP (zone V), had cropped up during investigations of riots cases, but the SIT is yet to summon them for questioning.

“There were many police officials who did not act responsibly during riots and stayed away from the spots where people were being massacred. The SIT is yet to react to these allegations,” Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM) secretary Mukul Sinha told DNA. Till now not a single police officer had been summoned by the SIT, Sinha said. Admitting that charges have been levelled against many police officers, sources in the SIT said,
“The charges are very grave and we are examining the allegations and corroborating evidence for fixing their roles in the riots.” The officials said if needed, the officers would be summoned for questioning once the basic scrutiny was over. Sinha, however, said the SIT should act fast and take against those police officials who failed to perform their duties. “It is a criminal negligence as several lives were lost due to their negligence,” he said.

JSM also claimed to have analysed the roles of top police officers posted in zones IV and V, besides the role of joint commissioner (section II), covering Naroda and Meghaninagar areas. “Instead of controlling the situation, they were present in Revadi Bazaar area,” Sinha alleged.

“Our findings show that police officers left the riot spots at crucial time after they received instructions from Jaydeep Patel,” Sinha said, and added that the phone records show the officers moved away from spots in Naroda, Meghaninagar and Naroda Gaam when people were being killed.
