Hijack scare: Man slapped with stringent charge

A man arrested in connection with Sunday's hijack scare involving an Indigo aircraft was on Monday slapped with the stringent charge of endangering life of co-passengers.

A man arrested in connection with Sunday's hijack scare involving an Indigo aircraft was on Monday slapped with the stringent charge of endangering life of co-passengers, the maximum punishment for which is life term.

Jitendra Kumar Mohla, 42, was booked under section 3(1)(a) of the Suppression of Unlawful Act Against Safety Of Civil Aviation Act, which concerns violent acts endangering the life of passengers as well as the aircraft.

The accused was produced before additional chief metropolitan magistrate Rajesh Kumar Goel, who sent him to 14  days judicial custody till February 16.

Mohla had on Sunday created ruckus inside the aircraft, forcing its emergency landing.

"He claimed himself to be a DGCA official, created nuisance when he was prevented by a cabin crew from changing seat during descending of the aircraft for landing at IGI
Airport," the police submitted before the court.

"Mohla claimed that he had a gun and infectious needle. He also threatened the staff by claiming that he was also involved in the IC 814 Kandahar hijacking case of 1999,
which forced the crew to inform the pilot, who gave a distress call for emergency landing," the police said.

The accused along with two others was deboarded by National Security Guard commandos and handed over to Delhi police.

The entire operation was coordinated by the BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security).

Besides, the stringent provisions of the Aviation Act, Mohla was also booked under Section 336 (Act endangering life and personal safety of others) and section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC.
