The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of all colleges in the state till further orders in the wake of increasing protest by students in support of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Hostels across the state would also be closed and students have been asked to vacate the same. “In view of the students' unrest, all colleges both private and government including hostels in the state will remain closed until further orders,” state chief secretary K S Sripathi said in a brief statement.

The Puducherry government also followed suit and announced on Sunday that all colleges in the Union Territory will remain closed indefinitely till further orders.

“The immolation by a youth last week and some political parties whipping up passions on the Lanka issue has prompted the government to take action. Students in Cuddalore, Salem and Coimbatore have been protesting vociferously and have also launched hunger strikes. Some student leaders have also threatened to step up the stir. In order to prevent the tension from escalating further, the government has decided to close all colleges in the state,” sources told DNA.

In the light of the government's decision to close down colleges and crack down on protesters, the hunger strikes are also likely to be called off. “The hunger strike in Cuddalore has been launched only by students of Periyar Arts College. We have information that they are going to call off the strike on Monday,” a senior police officer said.

Some universities have also postponed their examinations scheduled to be held from
Monday. While the MG Ramachandran Medical University has indefinitely postponed its examinations, Anna University has put off exams scheduled for the next two days. “Fresh dates would be announced later,” the sources said.

The government also warned political parties and other organisations from calling for bandhs in Tamil Nadu. Quoting a Supreme Court directive, the government said that it was illegal to stage bandhs in the state.
