With more than 10,000 votes and 25 nominations within eight months since its inauguration, the campaign — Pick Right/Kaun Banega Bharat ka Paryavaran Ambassador — is already being seen as a successful endeavour of Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and the ministry of environment and forests.

The Pick Right campaign and setting up of an education centre on climate change at Gujarat University are being seen as important initiatives for spreading awareness on environmental issues during the ongoing three-day seminar at CEE - Understanding the
Climate Change.

The ‘Vote for India’s Parayavaran Ambassador’ campaign was inaugurated on June 5, 2008 by president Pratibha Devisingh Patil. The campaign is being implemented across the country by CEE and aims at spreading awareness about climate change, its causes and effects. Any individual can be voted as the Ambassador to lead the movement.

There are no categories for the selection of capable candidates, it could be anyone: a teacher, student, actor, politician; anyone who the voter thinks can work for environmental issues and can make people understand the implications of climate change.

So far there 25 people have been nominated for the position of ‘paryavaran ambassador’.

Prarthana Borah, programme coordinator, CEE, Ahmedabad said, “We want a truly valued individual to represent Paryavaran as it is time we take required measures to save it. Our ambassador would be someone who genuinely relates to people and is working to preserve environment.”

The campaign is also a means to educate children on climate change through CEE’s climate change education programme.

Prarthana said, “We wanted to involve students in this voting and inform them what the entire campaign is about. For this, we have designed a ‘Climate change education package’. This package is sent to the schools and the students are taught about climate change from the material provided. They have discussions on the subject and vote for their nominee for the environment ambassador.”

Around two lakh students have been identified for the ‘Climate Change education programme’. The package has been designed for the age group of 7 to 14 years and has been printed in 15 languages for students all across India.

“The voting is open for all and others can vote online. The Paryavaran Ambassador would be announced on June 5, 2009 - World Environment Day.”
