Prime minister Manmohan Singh spent Sunday at home with his family after doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) discharged him after a re-do bypass surgery.

Although the doctors advised three weeks’ rest, Singh has started going through files at home.

The decision to discharge Singh was taken by the doctors after conducting pre-discharge tests on Friday. The prime minister was admitted to AIIMS on January 23 and an 11-hour operation was conducted on him the next day.

Doctors looking after the prime minister advised him to continue a strict dietary regime and keep a check on diabetes. For the first time, AIIMS allowed doctors from outside to operate on a patient. Experts from the Asian Heart Institute operated on Singh after five artery blockages.

“We are taking care of his diet and have advised him to continue proteins in his diet.

The prime minister has started taking solid food but his normal diet pattern will take at least two weeks to stabilize,” said Singh’s cardiologist K Srinath Reddy.

Before leaving hospital on Sunday morning, the prime minister met the team of experts and paramedical staff, who were on their toes since he was admitted nine days back.

“I am sure he will recover quickly. It will take him about two to three weeks to come to office and work. In fact, he has started seeing files but he will take a week to completely start working from home,” said health minister Ambumani Ramadoss.
