The prime suspect in college student Swetha Reddy's murder at Karmanghat here has been arrested, a top police official said on Friday.

The mystery behind Swetha's murder has been unravelled with the arrest of Shekar Reddy, a cousin of the deceased, Police Commissioner S Prabhakar Reddy said.

The BCom final year student was found at her house with bleeding injuries on her head on Tuesday evening.

During investigation, police zeroed in on to one Rajiv Gandhi, who along with Shekar had visited the victim's house a few days before the incident, the official said.

Gandhi revealed that Shekar Reddy informed him that he had received cut injury over his hand in a scuffle with Swetha and he wanted to get dropped at his native place, he said.

Police formed special teams to nab Shekar and arrested him from Mahbubnagar district on Thursday night.

Shekar told interrogators that after confirming Swetha was alone at house, he went to her residence. He hit her head with a bottle to make her unconscious and flee with money and jewellery.

"As Swetha raised an alarm Shekar got frightened and killed her. He later created a scene of rape in order to mislead the police," Reddy said.
