After defeat of its lone candidate in Uttar Pradesh Legislative assembly elections and ensuing blame game over cross voting, state Congress general secretary Vivek Singh has resigned from the party posts.

Singh, an MLA from Banda who also heads the media cell of the Congress, was reportedly "not happy" with allegations of
cross voting in the recent council polls made against him by a section of party workers.

"I have resigned from all the party posts and tendered my resignation to state party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi. I have also requested the party to suspend me as an MLA till the party inquiry clears  me," said Singh who resigned from the posts on Thursday.

He said that he would not participate in any party meeting or activity till he was given a clean chit.

The lone Congress candidate Ranjit Singh Judeo lost in the recent council polls. He got only 17 out of 21 votes of Congress MLAs raising speculation of cross voting.

Though Singh's detractors said that he was trying to get a ticket from the ruling BSP, his supporters said that he was a committed Congress worker and would remain in the party.

The issue of his resignation has been brought to the notice of Digvijay Singh, incharge of state Congress affairs, party sources said adding that were hopeful of convincing Singh to withdraw his resignation.
