Five get lifer for raping German girl

A local court sentenced five youths to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old German girl after abducting her from outside a five-star hotel last September.

A local court on Wednesday sentenced five youths to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old German girl after abducting her from outside a five-star hotel last September.
    
All the five were convicted on Tuesday by additional district and sessions judge Raj Shekhar Attri in a speedy trial that lasted just a week.
    
The judge announced the sentence after hearing agruments in camera from both the prosecution and the defence for three hours.
   
The five are Pankaj Punia, Manvir Singh Jolly, Harpreet Singh Dalli, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi and Sompal.

The five youths were convicted under section 376 (2) (g) (gangrape) of the Indian Penal Code and awarded life imprisonment.
    
Besides, the court slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each one of them for the gangrape offence.
   
The judge also held them guilty under section 473 (display of fake number plate on the vehicle), 363/366 (kidnapping) and 506 (threatening).
    
He awarded three-year jail term for their conviction under section 473 and five-year for the offence under section 363/366 besides imposing a fine of Rs 3,000 for each of these two offences.
    
The court also awarded one-year jail term and a fine of Rs 1,000 under section 506.
    
The total fine payable by each convict would be Rs 27,000 and all the four prison terms would run concurrently, the court said.

The German tourist was abducted from outside a five-star hotel in Chandigarh on September 28 last year and was taken to Samalakha in Haryana's Ambala district where she was raped at different farm houses.
     
In-camera proceedings in the court were held on January 16-17.
     
The recording of the statement and the cross-examination of the girl, who specially flew to India for the purpose, were completed on January 17.
     
The victim spoke in German during recording of her statement and was helped by three interpreters including one from the German Embassy.
     
After her deposition, the girl went back to her home on January 18. The Chandigarh administration bore the cost of her airfare.
    
She came to Chandigarh on September 23 to attend her friend's wedding.
