Prime minister Manmohan Singh had breakfast with his wife and daughters at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he is recuperating from a coronary bypass surgery.

After the complicated surgery on Saturday, the PM was first given a liquid diet, followed by semi-solid food on Monday. However, with his health conditions improving at a fast pace, the doctors have put him on a solid food diet.

Singh is now able to sit in his bed and has been talking to his family members who are the only people who were allowed to meet him.

“Seeing the Prime Minister’s recovery, we have decided to withdraw the ICU status of his room,” said Dr K. Srinath Reddy, senior cardiologist to the PM. The room in which Singh is recuperating had been upgraded to an intensive care unit with installation of sophisticated monitoring equipment.

However, Dr Ramakant Panda, the surgeon from Mumbai’s Asian Heart Institute who operated on the PM, had said that going by the speedy progress in Singh’s health, he may not require intensive care beyond Wednesday.
