Doctors are keeping a close watch on prime minister Manmohan Singh after a coronary angiography at the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday revealed more than one partial blockage in his arteries.

Though an official statement on Thursday said Singh was back at work from his residence, DNA has learnt that he has cancelled appointments till January 26.

With the PM out of action for the moment, it has become necessary to decide who will officiate in his absence. The most likely candidate is Pranab Mukherjee, who functions as the No 2 man in the union government. Mukherjee is likely to play a more public role in the coming days because of the forthcoming visit of president Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazhakstan, who is chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade.

A source privy to details of the PM’s medical condition said doctors performed a special blockage removal procedure on Wednesday. There was no official word on this, with the doctor heading the panel that attended on the PM, Srinath Reddy, maintaining that he only underwent an angiography.

A coronary angiography at the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday has revealed more than one partial blockage in arteries of prime minister Manmohan Singh’s heart.

The PM is being closely monitored to determine the line of treatment. For someone who has had a bypass surgery in 1990 followed by an angioplasty in 2004 before becoming PM, perhaps the only course of action to remove blockages is another bypass. The panel of doctors attending on the PM is hopeful that a surgery may not be necessary if the medication that he is on does its work and he is careful.

The PM’s health problems could not have come at a more unfortunate time. The days ahead are busy and the Congress will have to decided how much to involve the PM in the hectic schedule without straining him in his delicate condition.

Senior party and government leaders are expected to hold a war council on Thursday night after Mukherjee returns from his Kabul visit. The main concern is the Republic Day parade, which showcases the government to the country and the world. Obviously, the PM as head of government is an important figure here even though the president, as head of the republic, takes the salute.

With doctors advising the PM to rest and avoid exposure to the cold, it may not be possible for Singh to be present for the full two-and-a-half hour extravaganza on Rajpath. He may have to curtail his presence at the parade.
