Bollywood star Salman Khan is set to get back Rs5 lakh which was stuck in litigation for over eight years.

Khan had acted in the 2001 film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. The film, however, ran into trouble, as it was allegedly financed by the underworld. The financer of the film Bharat Shah and producer Nazim Rizvi were arrested for their links with the underworld.

On Wednesday, the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) judge YD Shinde ordered the collector to give Khan Rs25 lakh from the sale proceeds of the film.

In November last year, Khan had made an application that the money due to him was not paid. His application stated that as per an agreement with Rizvi, in September 1999, Khan was to get Rs1.5 core for acting in the film. However, after the producer’s arrest, the film was released through the court receiver and all the claims were to be settled by him. The film’s sale proceeds were to be deposited in the state treasury.

“My client has fulfilled his contractual obligations. While Rs1.25 crore has been paid to him, balance of Rs25 lakh is due,” said the actor’s lawyer Renuka Laxmeshwar.

Earlier in 2001, Khan had written to the court receiver Shankar Kamble to release the amount to him. However, Kamble had written back saying that the actor’s claims had been settled and there were no dues against his name.

Khan had then moved an application before the MCOCA court which had said that his dues would be cleared in due course of time. He then moved the Bombay High Court for his money and the issue was referred back to the MCOCA court.
