The Dr Ambedkar Law College here, which remained closed following violence in the campus in November, reopened on Monday, amidst tight police security.

According to police, only students possessing identity cards were allowed entry into the college.

College authorities said students had been instructed not to involve themselves in political and caste-related activities inside the campus and help the management in the "smooth functioning" of the institution.

The college was rocked by caste-related violence on November 12 when two groups of students attacked each other with wooden logs, iron pipes and stones in public view even as police officers stood "mute spectators". Three students were seriously injured in the clash.

The opposition parties in the state raised the issue of police "inaction," resulting in the transfer of then city commissioner R Sekar and the suspension of two other police personnel.

While more than 30 students allegedly involved in the incidents were either arrested or surrendered, the state government appointed the justice Shanmugam Commission to probe the campus violence.
