Family of engineer held hostage by pirates seeks police help

The family of Sravanan, one of three Indians being held captive by pirates, on Friday sought the city police commissioner's help for his safe release from clutches of the hijackers.

In a representation to Visakhapatnam City commissioner of Police N Sambashiva Rao here, Shiva, wife of Sravanan and other family members met Rao and informed him that Sravanan along with others was onboard a Kenyan vessel which was hijacked by the pirates near the coast of Kenya on January 9.

The commissioner said that he would take up the issue with foreign affairs ministry through proper channel. The exact number of persons held hostage was not known
and there was no information about the demand of hijackers, the commissioner said.

In her representation Shiva, a mother of two children, said her husband, an engineer working with a Kenya-based General Engineering Company, was on the ship for some
repairing work when the pirates attacked it.

We were informed by the company on January 9 and after that there was no any contact with the company officials, she said.

Besides Sravanan, the Kenyan fishing vessel MV Alpha Manyara has an Indian captain and another Indian crew aboard and was hijacked on January 9, according to relatives of the sailors taken hostage.

Sravanan, who hails from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, had settled in Visakhapatnam about 20 years ago. According to reports, the ship was hijacked by Somali pirates who took three Indians captive after releasing eight Kenyan crew members.
