PATNA: Five labourers were injured when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed here, the police said on Sunday.

The flyover, part of the Chiraiyatand road over bridge in Patna, caved in late on Saturday night, injuring the labourers who were sleeping near the construction site, the police said.

”Some labourers were injured in the accident, but there was no casualty," a police official said.

The construction at the site has been stopped because of heavy fog and cold wave sweeping Patna for the last two days, the officials said. "Fog and the cold wave saved more lives," the official said.

The incident, however, raised a question mark over the quality of material used for the construction by the Bihar State Bridge Corporation (BSBC), which has earned a lot of praise from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently.

Patna district magistrate Jitendra Kumar Sinha said a departmental inquiry into the accident would be conducted at the earliest and those responsible for it would be punished.

The Chiraiyatand road project is a joint venture between the Railways and the state government.
