NEW DELHI: Pressure mounted on UP chief minister Mayawati on Thursday with her opponents launching a multi-pronged attack. The SP demanded her resignation and immediate arrest for unleashing organised crime in UP.

The LJP sought a CBI probe into the PWD engineer’s murder, the Congress accused her of turning official machinery into a tool of lawlessness, and the BJP described her rule as “Goonda Raj”. LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan said the SP, Congress and LJP were united and would launch a more aggressive stir on Mayawati’s birthday, January 15.

Demanding Mayawati’s arrest, SP leader Amar Singh said: “Now that Mayawati has accepted the fault of her MLA, she should immediately step down and surrender before police. She is hand-picking all goons and anti-social elements and taking them into her party.”

Singh wanted income tax authorities to investigate Mayawati’s party funds and growing income. Asking the Centre to intervene, the SP leader indicated he might seek Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s intervention in the matter. He also lampooned Mayawati for going ahead with her birthday bash plans. “At a time when the country’s top leaders are refraining from celebrating their birthdays in view of the Mumbai terror attack, the UP CM is shamelessly going ahead with her birthday celebrations.”  He said that the SP had decided to mark her birthday as a “thoo-thoo (spitting) diwas”.

LJP leader Paswan said, “Whenever Mayawati has come to power, crores of rupees have been forcibly collected from government officials and common people to celebrate her birthday. Those unable to pay are beaten up and murdered”. “Governor TV Rajeswar should not remain silent. He should send a report if the state does not maintain law and order,” Paswan stressed.
