HAZARIBAG (Jharkhand): A social activist, who had complained the police about the threat to his life four months ago, on Thursday succumbed to his injuries after being shot in Hazaribag.

Virendra Kumar Pandey, a social activist in Barkatha, was in his way to Chalkusha in the district on Wednesday when he confronted some men who shot at him after a verbal bout.

Pandey was immediately rushed to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning, Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kamboj said.

Kamboj said the police have identified the culprits and efforts are on to nab them.

Pandey's family, meanwhile, alleged that the activist had earlier reported to the police about fear to his life but no action.

The family members claimed that the attackers took the name of a local MLA before opening fire on him.

The police captain, however, did not confirm whose name was taken. He, however, said extortion could be the motive behind the incident.
