If you thought Christmas carols and hymns were all western tunes, think again. An assortment of carols and hymns in regional dialects as diverse as Bhojpuri, Konkani, Manipuri, Punjabi and Santhali regaled Delhiites this weekend as the yuletide spirit gripped the capital.

Evangelical group Delhi Youth for Christ received great appreciation at a recent talk — the Indian Christmas —  by well-known theologian and meditation practitioner Robinson.

The 15-member Delhi Youth for Christ choir specialises in Christmas carols and hymns sung in various regional dialects and drawn from local musical styles.

Robinson, an alumnus of the elite St Stephen’s, whose book Christianity: An Indian
Theological Perspective awaits publication, says, “There is a distinct Indianness to
Christmas festivities here. Varied local customs of different Christian tribes living in different parts of the country form a great mix with traditional Christian customs, giving a unique flavour to Christmas in India. Hymns sung in regional dialects immediately connect with the audience.”

Delhi Youth for Christ is a movement of young people (ranging from school kids to 35-year-olds) who spend their time studying, teaching, counselling and working with school and college students and underprivileged groups. Group members include Delhiites, Himachal residents, Chhattisgarhis, Manipuris, Nagas, Keralites, Kannadigas, UPites and Punjabis, which explains the great mix.

While almost everyone who has attended Robinson’s discourse on Indian Christmas agrees hymns in regional dialects are a hit with the masses, the man hopes word spreads and demand for Delhi Youth increases.
