NANDIGRAM: The land-acquisition dispute at Nandigram is dead now. After an intense agitation for several months, the land could not be acquired for a proposed chemical plant in the region and therefore an alternative site was selected at Nayachar for the project.

But the Trinamool Congress intends to keep the fire burning in the region to gain political mileage. Abu Taher, a local Trinamool leader, says, “Nayachar is just an eye-wash and the state government will once again resort to land acquisition if they win in the by-elections.”

He also said the fear of losing land prompted the people of Nandigram to overthrow the CPI(M) in the panchayat elections and hoped the voters will ensure the CPI(M)’s defeat in the by-elections too.

In fact, during an hour-long drive through Sonachura, Garchakraberia and Kalicharanpur, this correspondent was unable to trace a single CPI poster in these areas. However, Trinamool posters featuring party chief Mamata Banerjee were pasted in large number.

This correspondent noticed the inflow of outsiders, carrying huge bags, in the region, but they were not intercepted by the state police or Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) battalion deployed there. These outsiders landed near Nich Kasba, hired trekkers and silently got scattered in areas like Sonachura, Garchakraberai, Kalicharanpur and Mohammadpur. Many of these outsiders walked straight into the panchayat offices with their luggage without being questioned once about their identities.

Despite repeated requests, this correspondent was unable to get any villager to speak on the influx on strangers in the region. Many people just said, “Everything is fine and there is no trouble now,” and shut their doors on this correspondent.
