NEW DELHI: Bail granted after police personnel staged a dharna? Believe it or nor, this has happened in Puducherry when a local court there granted bail to a lawyer but refused the same to a sub-inspector of police.

According to a CBI spokesperson, agency sleuths laid a trap and arrested a Sub-Inspector of Orleanpet Police station in Puducherry and a lawyer on Wednesday evening while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5000.

When they were produced before the principal sessionjudge on Friday morning, the lawyer was released on bail while the sub-inspector was remanded to the judicial custody, the spokesperson said.

"The police personnel alleged partiality and staged a demonstration on court premises and squatted on the court lawns and on the road. They also assaulted one of the photographers who was covering the incident," the CBI spokesperson said.

Later on, in the evening, a bail application was moved by the Sub-Inspector and he was released on bail. Local administration have viewed this incident very seriously and they are taking remedial action in this regard, the spokesperson said.

The CBI had arrested the two after a man approached the agency that a woman from Mudaliarpet had filed a complaint against him in a civil matter alleging that he has not returned her documents. The Sub-Inspector demanded a bribe and threatened him for registering an FIR against him.

Thereafter, the complainant approached the CBI. When he went to give the bribe to the sub-inspector, he was allegedly asked to come through an advocate. When the bribe was delivered through the advocate, the lawyer allegedly kept Rs 3000 with him and gave only Rs 2000 to the sub-inspector, the spokesperson claimed.

The CBI team then laid a trap and arrested both of them, the spokesperson said.
