Shabuddin Ahmed confessed that the AK 47s used by him and his associates in the January CRPF camp attack in UP, were to be put to use in the Mumbai incident.
Shabuddin Ahmed, the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist brought to Mumbai along with Fahim Ansari on Wednesday for questioning by the Mumbai crime branch about their role in the recent terror attacks, confessed that the AK 47s used by him and his associates in the January CRPF camp attack in Uttar Pradesh, were to be put to use in the Mumbai incident.
Ahmed, who first participated in the November 10, 2005, attack on the IIS campus in Bangalore, along with Abu Hamza, and used AK 47 rifles and hand grenades, was made chief of LeT operations in Kashmir. “Later I received a message from Muzamil to collect the weapons used in the attack and hand these over to one Faheem of Maharashtra. He was to come and collect the weapons for another operation in Mumbai,” Ahmed stated in his confession.
He was arrested on February 3, before he could execute the plan. Ansari also stated in his confession that while he was informed that he would be told about where a tanked-up Maruti with the weapons would be kept for him to pick up, the plan was later postponed. While Ansari was on stand-by, he panicked. And on January 8, when a Buddhist monk was killed in Govandi, the police reached his Grant Road building for enquiries.
“I got scared and intimated the same on a Dubai telephone number. On January 9, I got the message to escape to Nepal and meet Ashok. I boarded the Awadh Express the next day from Bandra terminus, bought an AC three tier coach ticket and reached Kathmandu on January 13 via Gorakhpur, Sonauli and Hairawa… I was asked to be in touch with Shabuddin Ahmed who was going to arrange weapons and men for launching an operation in Mumbai. I gave photos, videos and maps to Ahmed. The plan was postponed for few days for the arrangement of weapons, but I was arrested on February 10, 2008,” Ansari stated.
