Meet Nahadi Badr, the real-life avtaar of Munnabhai. Unlike Munnabhai, he was not a goon, but was equally hell-bent on fulfiling the dream his Bapu (father) had - of him becoming a doctor.

His story came to light after VP Road police arrested Badr, 30 - an Aurangabad resident - from a lodge near Mumbai Central station on Monday on charges of forging the certificates of his brother, who is a qualified doctor, to pass himself off as an MBBS.

Impersonating as a doctor, he married a doctor from Mumbai. But when his wife told him that he should study further for a degree in doctor of medicine (MD), Badr got scared and ran away. His wife came to know about the forged certificates and complained to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC). It led to the latter lodging a police complaint against Badr last year.

Police said that Badr, a resident of Jaisinghpura in Aurangabad, passed the higher secondary examination in 1998. His father wanted him to become an MBBS doctor. But despite his best attempts, he only managed a one-year lab technician diplomat from Sahar Hospital at Ravivar Peth, Pune.

“He tried hard but could not become a doctor. However, his brother, Faisal, went on to earn an MBBS degree in 2001,” said inspector Ajay Patankar of VP Road police station. “It further hurt Badr’s feelings.” Haunted by his unfulfilled dream, he studied several books on medicine and anatomy. But soon he realised that without an MBBS certificate, issued by the MMC, his knowledge would come to no avail.

Frustrated, Badr decided to forge the medical certificates of Faisal and one of his MBBS friends, said Patankar. “He then started applying for work in hospitals. In 2003, he joined a government hospital in Pune as a trainee doctor, and worked there till 2004. Next year, he came to Mumbai searching for a job. He got one - as a junior RMO in the ICU of Saifee Hospital, Charni Road. He joined work on September 5, 2005,” said Patankar.

Working at Saifee, Badr fell in love with one of his colleagues, Meghna Chaudhry (name changed), also an MBBS. The couple got married in April 2006. Soon afterwards, Meghna started telling Badr that both of them should go for the MD degree. He got scared and diverted the topic. Meghna tried to persuade Badr a few more times. Seeing him trying to evade the topic desperately, she got suspicious and sent Badr’s certificates to the MMC for verifications. A few weeks later, a report came from the MMC, stating that the certificates were forged.

It led to a fight between the couple, following which Badr fled home in June 2006 and went into hiding. Meghna filed no police complaint, but MMC official Madhukar Lad registered a case against him at VP Road police station, said sources. Knowing that police were on the lookout for him, Badr stopped visiting his Aurangabad home. He spent the intervening period, working in software firms in Hyderabad and Bangalore, said sources.

Finally, police got a tip-off that Badr would be coming to Mumbai Central on Monday night. “We found him in one of the lodges near the station. We identified him from the photograph we had of him,” said Patankar. On Tuesday, a court remanded him in police custody till December 23.
