Pune-based businessman Hasan Ali, allegedly involved in a massive money transfer racket, was finally arrested by the Mumbai police on Monday, minutes after he made an appearance in the Bhoiwada court to seek bail.

He was arrested by the Worli police for allegedly procuring two fake passports after furnishing forged documents. While one passport was issued from Mumbai the other was procured from Patna.

In February this year, an official from the Worli Regional Passport Office had approached the police and registered a complaint stating that Ali had obtained the documents using fraudulent means. The police said that Ali went into hiding soon after they filed a case against him under the Passports Act for holding more than one passport.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that Ali had travelled to Pakistan, Dubai and the UK while he possessed his original passport. “We want to get hold of the two fake ones to ascertain the countries to which he travelled. We can then question him about the purpose of the visit,” said Ashok Deshbrathar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III).

The police had r received a tip off that Ali was admitted to a hospital in Pune. “We had  put all the hospitals on an alert and raided them, but we could not find him,” said Bahrat Worlikar, senior police inspector.
In August, the cops received information that Ali was holed up in a farmhouse in the outskirts of Pune.

Ali  made headlines after he was probed by the Income Tax for possessing disproportionate financial assets and the Enforcement Directorate for illegal transfer of money from abroad.
