KHANDRU/ SHANGUS (South Kashmir): Prime minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday vowed to fight terrorism on all possible fronts. “We will continue to fight terrorism with full might,” he said at an election rally in south Kashmir.

The prime minister also had a word of advice for militants in Kashmir. “I want to tell these youths to shun the path of extremism and join the mainstream. Bloodshed will not solve any problem. It will only bring destruction. The only way to solve your problems is through talks in a democratic set-up,” he said.

Congratulating the people of Jammu and Kashmir for reposing the faith in the democratic process, he said the Centre had taken several steps to heal their wounds.

“We opened the road to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) so that you can go and meet your relatives. Similarly, your relatives can travel from PoK to meet their near and dear ones in India. We will try and open more roads. We want to heal the wounds of the people of this state,” he said.

Singh said the government wanted an amicable solution to the issue.

“We can’t change our borders, but we can make them irrelevant,” he said. Referring to the autonomy and self-rule proposals made by some political parties, he said the Congress had been a pioneer in bringing self-governance to villages and towns through the 73rd and 74th amendment to the Constitution.

“We want to bring change through the pancyhati raj system,” he said.

PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohommad Sayeed has welcomed Singh’s determination to resolve the Kashmir issue through dialogue.

“It is an appropriate and fitting response to the mature, civilised and non-violent aspirations of the people of the state. Singh’s reiteration that his government is  committed to carrying forward and expand the process of cross-LoC cooperation and trade will help create a new space for reconciliation in the region,” he said.
