The police have arrested Rohit Sharma, 19, in connection with the murder of Akash Babbarwal, whose charred body was found from the boot of car near Bombay High Court on Tuesday. The police are now on the look out for Rohit’s elder brother, Sourav Sharma, 24, who is allegedly involved in the murder.

Officials said that the white Ford Ikon in which Akash’s body was found belonged to the brothers.

“We arrested Rohit for allegedly murdering Akash. His brother Sourav is absconding,” said inspector Motiram Bapu Kadam, Shivaji Nagar police station.

Kadam further said it was a case of extortion as the duo had demanded a ransom of Rs50 lakh. The police are not ruling out the possibility that Akash may also be involved in his kidnapping.

Investigations revealed that Sourav was Akash’s classmate at Lala Lajpat Rai College.

According to police officials, on November 30, Akash left his home saying that he was going to his friend Himanshu’s birthday party at Kalbadevi. When he did not return, his father, Yogendra Babbarwal, filed a missing complaint with the police.

During interrogation, Himanshu said that he had not organised any party.

Police sources claimed that Akash had lied to his parents as they did not know  Himanshu’s address. His plan was to go to Rohit’s house and get drunk. He feared that if he told his parents, his father would come to Rohit’s house.
