PARAVUR(Kerala): Not giving up hope, a 62-year-old woman here has been waiting for over three months to receive the body of her son, who died in Saudi Arabia in July this year after being allegedly beaten up by his Egyptian officer.

Vasumathi, had pinned all hopes on her 32-year-old son, Subeesh, and had gathered whatever little she had to send him to the Gulf hoping their miserable life would come to an end. But that was not to be. To her horror, she received information that her son had died after being beaten up by an employer. Since then, she has been waiting to see her son for the last time.

Following the intervention of some good Samaritans and a human rights organisation in Saudi Arabia, efforts are on to complete the post mortem of the body and bring it to Kerala as soon as possible, Vijaykumar, vice-president, Federation of Malayali Association in Saudi Arabia, said.

Subeesh was working in a sand mining company at Alkarji, 400 km away from Riyad. On July 14 this year, seeing his Egyptian superior beating up another Keralite, Subeesh tried to stop him but got beaten up in the bargain.

Having suffered some internal injuries, his friends Vijaykumar and Balan, who were working in another company, admitted him to Sumarshia Hospital where he died after 12 days on July 26. His body has been kept at the hospital mortuary.  Subeesh’s dream was to build a home for his mother, who did not have a house and was living in a tent in ‘poramboke’ land with a visually challenged son and a grown up daughter.

Vijaykumar said his association has donated about Rs1 lakh to Subeesh’s family as an initial help to build a home for them.
