Mumbai Crime Branch has taken in custody one gangster, named Fazlu Rehman, and five of his associates for their involvement in usurping lakhs of rupees online from the bank accounts.
Joint commissioner of police (Crime Branch), Rakesh Maria, told DNA: “It is certainly not the underworld gangster Fazlu Rehman. I have been out the whole day and am not aware if any people have been arrested.”
Rehman, who was arrested sometime back by a special unit of New Delhi police, was brought to Mumbai on Tuesday and booked for his involvement in a case registered by Cuffe Parade police station on Monday, regarding a cyber theft in a bank account in the Cuffe Parade branch of a private bank. Sources said: “The case has been transferred to the cyber cell of the Mumbai police. The gang’s modus operandi was to hack into accounts of depositors in various high-profile banks and wire transfer the money to their own accounts.”
