NEW DELHI: It seems the Congress is facing financial strain. The party’s political managers say the party’s advertisement and publicity campaign in Delhi will now commence from Thursday and gradually pick up.

It means that the Congress’s publicity campaign will begin on the day polling comes to an end in Chhattisgarh. The party’s political managers say the party is short of funds, because of which it could not start its advertisement campaign earlier. “We do not have the kind of money that others have,” says Vivek Bansal, secretary of the publicity and campaign committee.

The delay is all the more intriguing give the fact that the Congress began its poll preparations well in advance. A high-powered publicity and campaign committee headed by Digvijay Singh was set up several months ago. The committee’s members included Rahul Gandhi, Verappa Moily and Anand Sharma. It invited some of the top ad firms to make a presentation before finally deciding on Crayon to plan and execute its publicity and ad campaign.

The delay in the campaign has set tongues wagging . “I do not know what is happening and why it is happening,” says an AICC general secretary.

Part of the problem, say AICC sources, is that though the AICC was supposed to handle the advertising part, later the state units said they would like to handle it on their own. Hence, it was left to each state unit to plan and execute its campaign.

The Chhattisgarh and MP unit entrusted a local advertising agency called to handle its publicity, the Rajhashtan unit selected Crayon, while Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has entrusted the Delhi publicity campaign to an agency of her choice.

Unlike the BJP, which has launched a well-coordinated campaign in each of the states, there is a perceptible lack of cohesion in the Congress camp. A worried central leadership has now sent out instructions to its state units to quickly launch the ad campaign.
