Experts say if the ongoing TV crisis is not resolved soon then channels may bypass the production houses and start shooting for serials themselves

Starting next week, if you see Anandi getting married again in Balika Badhu, Sita getting kidnapped by Ravana yet again in Ramayan or a blackout of certain channels late at night when your favourite programme was supposed to be re-run, don’t be surprised.

As things stand now, that’s what is set to happen if the deadlock between Worker’s Federation and the producers is not resolved within the next couple of days.

Some of the entertainment channels have decided to switch off their channels or run paid advertorial programmes (like why you must buy that ab cruncher etc) during late-night slots. The bosses of the big channels are scurrying for alternative content to fill up those ‘empty’ slots because there cannot be recap of a recap.

Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar says, “The channels must fill up the re-cap slots with something else. I have a feeling that most channels will bypass the production house and start shooting for the serials themselves. The contract allows the channel to do so.”

However, the channels are sticking to the November 9 deadline given to the producers to submit pending tapes of the programmes at earlier agreed rates. Even the producers are busy working out a solution with the workers so that they can stick to the rates.
Rajesh Kamat, CEO of Colors, was unavailable for comment.

However, source says, “Bigg Boss will be on since it’s a reality show and you don’t need anybody to put the show on air. And you cannot lock up the participants for any reason whatsoever. However, in Colors all other shows will be affected  if the deadlock isn’t resolved.”.

Another source from the TV industry says, “The channels are in a fix. They, too, would incur heavy losses as advertisers won’t agree to pay a hefty sum for shows that have already been aired. So the earnings of the channels are going to be hit very badly. The only option for some of the smaller channels is to cut down on programming time, especially at late nights.”

There are approximately 143 national entertainment channels in our country.
