KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee got a taste of her own medicine when supporters of the Nano project resisted her entry into Singur on Sunday afternoon.

This was her first visit there after the Tatas pulled out the small-car project.
As soon as she reached Singur, she was shown black flags and banners reading ‘Go back, Mamata’ by supporters of the ‘Save Singur Nano Committee’.

Earlier, Trinamool MLA and leader of opposition in the West Bengal assembly Partho Chattopadhyay’s car was attacked, its wind-screen smashed. Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha member, Mukul Roy’s vehicle was also stopped from entering Singur.

The situation turned violent when Trinamool men retaliated with bamboo sticks, iron rods and brickbats. At least five committee activists were injured. The police fired tear gas shells to control the mob, said IG (law & order) Raj Kanojia.

Later, speaking to reporters, Mamata alleged that CPI(M) men had attacked her and other Trinamool leaders in the presence of senior police officers, who remained mute spectators. “My meeting was announced long ago and I was supposed to be present there to demand return of land to unwilling farmers. I want my movement to be peaceful. But if CPI(M) attacks us again I will not keep silent. If there is even a scratch on my body, the state government will have to pay for it,” she said.

She also sought imposition of Article 356 in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the Singur tension has thrown the entire Durgapur Expressway out of gear. Vehicles were stranded for kilometres.
