NEW DELHI: Appalled at the “treatment” meted out by the state government to AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, and exposing him to greater risks by lowering his security, the Centre has reportedly sought an explanation from the Mayawati government about this “deliberate lapse”.

Kanpur is the constituency of minister of state for home, Prakash Jaiswal who helped organise Rahul’s visit. Security experts including SPG circles are at a loss to explain the state government’s behaviour in dealing with a high security risk VVIP. This too, when Maya herself has been demanding the elite force’s protection. The SPG cover is available for the prime minister, former prime ministers, Sonia Gandhi and her immediate family members.

A senior police official who was earlier with the SPG said that despite the elite force’s presence, it’s the state government’s duty to ensure arrangements of the high-risk protectees.

“Normally, the SPG undertakes an advance visit to the state to be toured by the VVIP to finalise security arrangements in coordination with local officials. Even what is perceived to be a sudden change in the protectee’s schedule is done with the SPG’s understanding. In this case, it seemed to have been ignored,” he felt. Protecting the VVIP from “embarrassing situations” such as lack of an audience that had been pointed out in this case by the VC of Kanpur University, is also part of the security drill and is done in coordination with the SPG.

UP police chief Vikram Singh said he will inquire into the incident of Gandhi being prevented from addressing the students.
