JAIPUR: Transport minister Yunus Khan seems to be running into trouble before the assembly elections. A lower court in Sikar has taken cognisance against Khan on the charges of organising a ‘death feast’ soon after his father’s death in 2005. If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail.

Besides Khan, the judicial magistrate (III) at Sikar has also summoned seven others including the then collectors of Sikar and Nagaur for participating in the feast. The Rajasthan Prevention of Death Feast Act, 1960 prohibits organising and participating in the feasts associated with the death a family member. “The judicial magistrate has directed the accused to appear before the court on November 29,” the complainant’s advocate, AK Jain told DNA on Friday.

Kailash Meena of PUCL moved the complaint alleging that Khan organised a chehlum on May 26, 2005 after his father’s death. He said chehlum is a ritual organised by Muslims on the 40th day of a relative’s death. “Mourners take food along with the community men that day,” Jain told the court.

As per the complainant, the death feast was organised at the minister’s native village Ganedi in Sikar district and it was attended by the who’s who of the state including the chief minister.

Meena, however, failed to satisfy the court about the CM and other ministers’ presence in the ritual. The magistrate has also taken cognisance against Waqf Board chairman, Saukat Ansari, BJP MLA from Makrana, Bhanwar Lal Rajpurohit, former Nagaur collector, Alok Gupta, former Sikar collector, Ram Rakh and  former Sikar SP  Laxmi Narayan Meena for allegedly participating in the death feast.
