CHENNAI: Estranged grand nephew of DMK leader M Karunanidhi and former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran met the Tamil Nadu chief minister on Sunday and handed over his resignation letter from the Lok Sabha on the Sri Lankan issue.

"I handed over the resignation letter as Member of Parliament. I (would) also like to voice 'solidarity' with all the DMK MPs in raising the issue," the former Union IT and communications minister said.

Maran said like his colleagues, he handed over his resignation letter as MP with "today's date to the chief minister."

Speaking to reporters after Dayanidhi Maran came to his residence to hand over his resignation letter, Karunanidhi said, "it is a normal meeting. He gave his resignation letter to me."

Earlier, Maran had sought an appointment with the chief minister to present his resignation letter from Lok Sabha.

In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Maran said, "through media reports I came to know that during the all party meeting held in the city recently a decision was taken that if the Centre did not take any positive steps on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue within two weeks, all the MPs from Tamil Nadu would resign from their post."
