In a move that will help police officials to delve into the mindset of suspected terrorists, the Mumbai police crime branch is planning to hold interactive sessions between all the deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of police in the city and the arrested Indian Mujahideen (IM) module members.

Until now, only officers from special branches like Anti-Terrorism Squad and crime branch had an access to these suspects.

“We will be calling all the DCPs and ACPs and give them a chance to interact with the IM members. This is to give the officers a chance to understand the psyche of the terrorists, their way of functioning and how to detect terror modules,” said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Maria also said that during the sessions, the officers would be told how people get indoctrinated, go into hiding, conceal their identity, conduct recce, get information about explosives and plant bombs and then evade arrest.

“Crime branch officers will explain to the officers how the IM members were caught,” said Maria. The crime branch may also invite senior police inspectors from Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune for the sessions.

“It is important for the local police to know the grassroots level of terrorism and terrorists,” said a crime branch officer, requesting anonymity. The officer further said that earlier most of the terrorists were uneducated, but now computer experts, doctors and engineers are being indoctrinated in the name of Jihad.

The crime branch recently arrested around 20 alleged members of Indian Mujahideen, including Mohammad Sadiq Shaikh, a co-founder of the terror outfit. The police have seized a huge cache of explosives from the IM members who were responsible for several blasts in the country since 2005.
