NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday signalled an end to the war words between some of its leaders and SP general secretary Amar Singh by regretting the use of harsh language between the two sides. “We regret that such a discourse took place, and it should never have been initiated,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari.

The Congress party’s decision to pour cold water over the spat came after the SP leaders’ hour-long meeting with prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday morning. It also follows in the aftermath of an angry exchange of words between
Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi and Amar Singh. Furious with Amar Singh’s “doublespeak” on the Batla house encounter in Jamianagar and the killing of a Delhi Police sub-inspector Satyavrat had suggested that the SP leader may have “lost his mental balance and required medical help”.

Amar Singh had retorted by calling Satyavrat a chirkut (small fry). “The chirkut Congress leader asked me to consult a doctor... I know only one doctor and that is Dr Manmohan Singh whom I met this morning,” Singh said after meeting the prime minister Manmohan at South Block.

Amar Singh appeared suitably mollified after his hour-long meeting the prime minister and denied that he had ever threatened to withdraw support from the UPA or had even demanded the resignation of home minister Shivraj Patil.

The SP leader did however clarify that his party was very concerned about the Batla house encounter and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav intended raising the issue at the SP-Congress coordination committee meeting on October 13.

He said he did not give to much importance to the remarks made by other Congress leaders as he was in direct touch with the prime minister and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. “I only know prime minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Digvijay Singh and other senior Congress leaders. I only give credence to what they say, there are several small party functionaries in the Congress as well as SP and I don’t react to what they say about me or about our relationship with the Congress,” he added.
