Lionel S Correia, better known as DJ Lion-L, an Andheri resident, has been DJ-ing for the last six years. He has also been playing at Navratri events since the last two years.
In 2007, he played in Hyderabad, Ahmednagar and Pune.

“This year, we will be playing for Don Bosco at King Circle, Hyderabad Estate on Napean Sea Road and at Kalyan colony. We played from Ravoli camp, Sion to Lalbaugh for the immersion of the Durga statue last year,” he said.

About the music in Navratri he said, “On the basis of public demand, initially we play dandiya songs like those of Falguni Pathak. Then we play Bollywood songs –– mostly remixes and a few originals as well. Most people in the audience enjoy Punjabi songs . Our speciality during Navratri is garba and dandiya songs mixed and blended with Bollywood remixes for a disco-dandiya atmosphere. Orchestras are in big demand by people who have big budgets. But people who don’t have big budgets go for DJs, who are more popular in societies and at schools.”

Lionel says, “DJs have an advantage over orchestras, as the systems are  quick to set-up. A DJ can provide non-stop music of various artistes and bring in a party atmosphere. The music is also for the non-Gujarati crowd, where they can play dandiya and garba at the start and disco towards the end. I have my own lighting and microphone set-up and play recorded songs on CD. Dandiya songs have not changed much in three years.”

About his music equipment, Lionel adds, “The setup I use is a little different and advanced as compared to other DJs. It comprises of 2 Denon DN-S3500 DJ CD players along with a Vestax PCV-275 DJ mixer and connective interface in the hardware section and Torq in the software. Through this setup, I run all my tracks from my MacBook using Torq, but all the controls of the music — like  scratching, looping, brake effects, pitch bending and more — are done through the CD players.”

Talking about the popularity of DJs at festivals, Lionel said, “This is a trend that has taken the international market by storm and is slowly picking up in the Indian market as well. We are able to locate tracks faster and prepare a more creative set for the crowd.”
