CHANDIGARH: Efforts were on Monday to nab the men who allegedly abducted  a German woman from the upscale Taj hotel here and took her to a room where they raped her before dropping her nearly 12 hours later.

The incident took place early on Sunday when five to six men in a black Scorpio SUV kidnapped the 20-year-old tourist from the parking lot of the Taj in Chandigarh's commercial hub Sector 17.

The woman, in the city to attend the wedding of a Germany-based NRI, has complained that she was taken to a room where she was raped, beaten and threatened. About 12 hours later, around 3 pm on Sunday, a white Maruti dropped her in Sector 20, close to the hotel.

SS Srivastava, the city's senior superintendent of police, said: "The victim has told the medical board that she had been raped."

"The final report confirming the rape is still awaited," Srivastava said.

"We are also trying to collect clues with the help of CCTV cameras installed at the hotel from where the young tourist was abducted," he added.

Police has traced the registration number of the Scorpio to Haryana. "We are also trying to establish the details of white Maruti car that dropped her back in Sector 20," said a police official.

Sketches of the youth involved based on descriptions by the German woman have been made.
