Suryakant’s firm, BDTA signed pact in 1997 to develop Pune church land

PUNE: Vijaynagar Colony, Sadashiv Peth, Pune, has emerged as the key link between Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar's brother Suryakant and the two firms that bid to develop prime land belonging to Christ Church in Byculla, central Mumbai.

In October 2003, when the PB Amolik faction of the Bombay Diocesan Trust Association (BDTA) opened tenders to sell Christ Church land, Sharada Developers Pvt Ltd and Deccan Constructions and Investment Company were the front-runners of six bidders.

While both firms initially stated their address as Sharada Centre, Erandwane, Pune, Deccan Constructions, which won the bid, later gave its address as 38, Vijaynagar Colony, Pune.

It may be just a coincidence, but 38, Vijaynagar Colony, Sadashiv Peth, Pune, is also the registered address of Sharada Erectors Pvt Ltd, which was headed by Suryakant Pawar from the time the firm was founded in 1989 till his resignation as chairman and managing director in March 2007.

In documents submitted by Sharada Erectors to the registrar of companies, the address has been listed as the residence of Rajeev Purushottam Bodas (55) and his brother Vishwas (60), who along with Suryakant (72) founded the firm.

Rajeev Bodas now heads the Sharada Group, which is believed to be named after Sharadabai, Sharad Pawar's mother. The firm has branches in Pune (Sharada Centre, 11/1 Erandwane) and Mumbai (Savarkar Smarak, Dadar), and 'contact points' in Dubai and London.

In the firm's annual returns filed with the registrar of companies, it has been stated that Suryakant (residing at 122, 2 North Main Road, Koregaon Park, Pune) was chairman and managing director from June 13, 1989, when the company was registered, to March 31, 2007. On its board of directors are Rajeev Bodas (managing director), Vishwas Bodas (whole-time director), Surendra Waman Deshpande, and Shyam Sadashiv Wagh. While Suryakant and the Bodas brothers have been with the firm since its inception, Deshpande and Wagh joined it in December 2005.

On the day of his resignation (March 31, 2007), Suryakant transferred five lakh equity shares to Ashish Rajeev Bodas. On April 12 the same year, he transferred another 96.49 lakh shares. Also on April 12, he transferred 64 lakh shares to Rajeev Bodas, 1.14 crore shares to Vishwas Bodas, and 1.01 crore shares to Ashlesha Rajeev Bodas.
Meanwhile, Deccan Constructions has been removed from the list of the registrar of companies on the website of the ministry of company affairs.
