Kidney case: Accused police inspector granted bail

NEW DELHI: A suspended Delhi police inspector, accused along with six others of extorting over Rs 19 lakh from a close aide of kidney racket kingpin Dr Amit Kumar, has been granted bail by a city court.
    
Additional Sessions Judge V K Bansal allowed the bail application of suspended policeman Rameshwar Khatri on furnishing a personal bond and two surety bonds of Rs 35,000 each.
    
The court referred to the statement of Dr Upender, a close aide of Dr Amit Kumar who was allegedly forced to pay a bribe of Rs 19.85 lakh to accused policemen for letting him off he was caught in connection with the kidney racket.
    
"Dr Upender and his disclosure statement does not utter a word against the involvement of the present applicant (Khatri) in the extortion," the court said.
    
It, however, imposed various conditions on Khatri such as he would neither tamper with the evidence nor leave the country without prior permission of the court.
    
Meanwhile, other accused policemen also filed their bail applications, which were fixed for hearing on September 25.
    
Seven policemen, including Inspector Khatri and ASI Ravinder Kumar Singh, had allegedly extorted Rs 19.85 lakh from Dr Upendra, an accused in the Gurgaon kidney racket, for letting him and his driver off after they were picked up in January.
   
The policemen are booked under various sections of the IPC including 384 (extortion), 385 (putting persons in fear for extorting money), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 120B criminal conspiracy).
