Aamir Khan flew in directly from Ladakh to Mumbai to speak to the media about how excited he was about his film, Taare Zameen Par (TZP) being India’s choice for Oscars this year.

Aamir answered all questions, even the most sensitive ones, especially one with a reference to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.

When asked about his opinion on the banning of a film by a political party or a leader (referring to Raj’s earlier announcement asking for a ban on the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer, The Last Lear in Maharashtra) in a particular city or area, Aamir replied, “I don’t agree with this viewpoint at all. India is one big country. We have different cultures and different languages. Any leader who tries to divide us on the basis of language should not be encouraged at all. Every film should be allowed to be released everywhere. In fact, I think it is our responsibility that we should choose progressive leaders, whose leadership can benefit the society. As responsible citizens we should vote for people who promote peace and prosperity and not those who try to divide us,” he said.

Aamir Khan, has also faced a similar situation, when Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi called for a ban on his film Fanaa, because of his involvement with the Narmada dam cause.

When someone referred to him as the king of Bollywood, he retorted, “Shah Rukh Khan will get upset if he comes to know of this.”

When asked to pick his favourite from the list of other contenders for India’s entry to Oscars, he said, “I haven’t watched A Wednesday. But amongst Mumbai Meri Jaan and Jodhaa Akbar, I preferred Mumbai Meri Jaan.”

When asked about his preparations for the Oscars, he said, “Due to Lagaan,  I am not completely unknown there, and that would certainly help me. This is a window of opportunity to reach a larger audience and we will try and hold as many screenings as possible to ensure that as many members of the academy will be able to watch it. That’s what we did previously, and we hope to follow suit this time as well”
