JAMMU: A militant was on Monday killed on the LoC in a gunbattle with the army which opened fire at a group of armed terrorists who entered the Indian territory in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A jawan was also killed in the 27-hour gunbattle which began on Sunday, defence officials said.

"A group of armed militants entered the Indian territory from Kabaristan post of Pakistan and were trapped by troops close to Kalash Indian Post between Zeroline and border fencing along LoC in Poonch district at 0830 hours on Sunday morning," they said.

After a lull of eight hours, a fierce gunbattle broke out again this morning, they said adding that one militant was killed. His body was lying on the Indian side.

The operation was still on when reports last came in from the area, they said adding that infiltration of militants followed the heavy cross-border firing on Indian positions along LoC since Sunday.

"We cannot lift the body in view of firing from militants and apprehension that militants may have laid a landmine trap beneath the body of the militant," they said.
