LUCKNOW: Opposition parties on Saturday slammed the Uttar Pradesh Government for imposing entry tax and increasing VAT on various products to garner additional revenue to the tune of about Rs 100 crore per month.

Lashing out at the state government's decision to increase VAT from four to 12.5 per cent on various products, the Opposition parties said the new taxation will multiply the impact of inflation, which has already touched 12.24 per cent.

Our worst fears are coming true with the government now hiking the VAT from the existing four to 12 per cent which would lead to further inflation, SP spokesman, Rajendra Chaudhary said.

"After fleecing funds out of the state exchequer on constructing, demolishing and reconstructing parks and memorials, Mayawati is now out to burn a hole in the pockets of the common man through this decision," Chaudhary said.

There was no need for the government to deviate from the standard tax slab as there was no dearth of funds with the Centre providing enough financial assistance, Congress Spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh said.

Criticising the government for the steep hike in taxes, BJP Spokesman Hriday Narain Dixit said "the Chief Minister should have cut down on the VIP expenditure rather than putting additional burden on the common man.

The decision of new tax hike was taken by the State Cabinet at its meeting presided over by the Chief Minister Mayawati yesterday to increase VAT from four to 12.5 per cent on electronic goods like, computers and cell phones, iron products, medicated soaps, hair oils and some medicines.
