Malayalam film industry hit by another controversy

KOCHI: Another controversy is brewing in the Malayalam film industry with the Kerala Film Producers Assoiation (KFPA) deciding to exhibit new releases in maximum centres in the first week itself and the theatre owners resisting such a move.
  
The film Exhibitors association had opposed the move saying it would affect their collection in lead centres.
  
Earlier, new films were being released in 48 centres which was increased to 85 centres six months ago.
  
KFPA Secretary, G Suresh Kumar, said the association would go ahead with its decision to exhibit the new Ramzan releases in maximum centres. According to the association pirated CDs and DVDs of latest films hit the market within days of the
film being released. Exhibiting the films in maximum number of centres will ensure high collection.
  
Exhibitors Federation Secretary, M C Boby said the exhibitors were giving huge amounts to the producers for the films and they had only asked for the list of theatres where the film was to be released. However, there were no plans to shut down the theatres, he said.
  
'Kurukshetra' starring Mohanlal is among the films slated for release during Ramzan.
  
Earlier, the industry was on the brink of a split following differences with the office bearers of Malayalam Cine Techinicians Association (MACTA).
