Kiran Powar and Robbin Morris say they have gained some valuable experience by playing in the league

MUMBAI: Though the Indian Cricket League (ICL) may not be recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) it has fulfilled the dreams of many a young cricketer, many of whom were staring at an uncertain future.

Mumbai Champs all-rounder Kiran Powar expressed his happiness with the manner in which the first two tournaments of the ICL were held. “It was a great experience to play in the ICL. We had the opportunity to play with great cricketers like Brian Lara and others. We couldn’t have dreamt of playing with them before we joined the ICL,” Powar told DNA.

“In the ICL everything is done in a very professional manner. Be it the type of accommodation, the fitness sessions and practice sessions. This kind of planning is not the BCCI’s strength,” Powar added.

Robin Morris, who has represented Mumbai in Ranji trophy, believes it is the attention to detail that is the strength of the ICL. “They have qualified fitness experts, physiotherapist, trainers and coaches,” said the Mumbai Champs player. He further revealed that his game has improved since joining the ICL.

“My technique has improved vastly and by playing against some of the best cricketers in the world I have grown in confidence,” Morris said.

However, Morris who is employed with the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, is upset that he is not been able to play in Mumbai’s local tournaments. “We are not able to practice on the BCCI affiliated grounds. We only want to play the game and nothing more. I work out in the gym and run everyday to keep fit, but I am not allowed to play in important local tournaments that help me fine-tune my skills. This is very unfair,” Morris said.

On the future of players who play the ICL, both Powar and Morris said in one voice. “We believe in the ICL. We have been working hard and Kapil Dev has said don’t worry about the future, hence we are focusing on our cricket,” they said.
