Prisoner dies after clash with prison guards

KOLKATA: An inmate of the Presidency Jail here died on Wednesday after a clash with prison guards, police said.
 
"An inmate called Mohammad Azharuddin died on Wednesday morning at the jail hospital. He had suffered head injuries on Tuesday during a clash with prison guards. The inmates were resisting transfer of a prisoner to Dum Dum Central Jail on the outskirts of the city," S.R. Hossain, deputy inspector general of police (prison), said.
 
"We are trying to investigate if any foul play led to his death," Hossain added.
 
According to prison sources, about 50 prisoners who support city-based mafia don Gudda attacked the prison guards with blades and bricks on Tuesday afternoon while they were trying to transfer him to Dum Dum Central Jail. The guards, in turn, hit the prisoners with batons.
 
"In the clash, 20 prison guards and 30 inmates were injured. Gudda himself slashed his stomach and hand with blade to prevent his transfer," Hossain said.
 
Guddu's transfer has been postponed till he is discharged from the jail hospital.
