DINDIGUL: A Biomedical Waste Management project has been formally launched in government hospitals throughout Tamil Nadu after various categories of employees, including nurses, underwent a one week training programme.

Government officials said that the project, launched on Tuesday, comes into operation from Wednesday.

They said that Waste paper baskets in five colours - yellow, blue, black, red and green had been provided to the hospitals with instructions on how to use them.

The black basket would be used to dispose expired medicines and radiation waste, the red for syringes, blood sachets, medicines (half-used) and glucose bottles and the yellow for dumping parts of bodies and operated portions of the anatomy, they said.

The Blue basket would be used to dipose bottles and broken glass pieces and the green, for other garbage. The baskets had been distributed to all the wings of the hospitals.
