NEW DELHI: Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bhukhari has accused saffron outfits such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal of having a possible role in the terror attacks in India.

Bukhari, who met prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, demanded a high-level enquiry into the role of the VHP and Bajrang Dal in the terror attacks in Malegaon, Nanded and Parbhani districts of Maharashtra and across Orissa, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.

Bukhari also demanded setting up of a judicial commission with proper representation of minorities to look into cases of those arrested from the minority communities in various terrorism-related cases prior to judicial proceedings and see whether their cases are valid.

“Muslims of the country are concerned about the arrests of Muslim youths in the name of terrorism. It’s a tragedy that hundreds of Muslim youths have been put behind bars without any proof, only in the name of having any relation with a banned organisation. Despite a tribunal of the Delhi high court and several senior officials from various states accepting that there isn’t any evidence to prove that this organisation has links with terror attacks, countless Muslim youths are languishing in jails,” Bukhari said.
