NEW DELHI: Five people including an assistant sub-inspector of police were crushed to death, and five others injured by a speeding fuel tanker in the capital, the police said on Monday.

The incident occurred after the tanker driver lost control over the vehicle in Timarpur in north Delhi late Sunday night, the police said.

“There had been an accident on the spot earlier and a PCR (police control room) van was present there. Several passers-by had also gathered there. The tanker hit the group from behind killing five people on the spot and injuring as many,” a police officer said.

The victims include ASI Balkar Singh, who was in charge of the PCR van. The other victims are yet to be identified. The injured were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, the officer said.

“The truck driver and cleaner are absconding after the incident,” the officer added.
