The ball is now in the governor’s court as both W Bengal govt, Trinamool say they will heed his advice

KOLKATA: Finally, a solution seemed to be in sight to the Singur impasse on Monday, with both the West Bengal government and Trinamool Congress dropping enough hints that they would agree to governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi’s suggestion.

On a day of rapid developments, Gandhi submitted a letter to chief minister Buddhadeb
Bhattacharjee, besides holding another, hour-long meeting with Trinamool MLA and leader of opposition in the state assembly Partho Chattopadhyay.

Bhattacharjee told reporters in the evening that he had received the letter and informed Gandhi of his positive intent. “I told the governor that I support the contents of his letter.
I am open to discussion and solution if it comes through the means suggested by the governor,” he said. Bhattacharjee also said he was preparing ground for an all-party meeting on the issue shortly.

Chattopadhyay said he requested the governor’s direct intervention to solve the problem. “However, the governor told me there were technical problems in him directly intervening in the matter. Instead, he suggested mediation by an independent and unbiased individual, who is acceptable to both the parties and does not belong to either political party or any industry group,” he said.

Chattopadhyay is slated to meet Gandhi again on Tuesday for a third round of talks.
Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee too told reporters that she was willing to accept any solution suggested by the governor.

Amid all these positive signals, the Tata Motors plant, however, remained shut on the fourth consecutive day. A company spokesman said the situation was still not conducive for operations to resume.

Meanwhile, a group of intellectuals, including film director and actress Aparna Sen and theatre personalities Shaoli Mitra and Bartya Basu, joined the Trinamool gherao of the Nano plant at Singur on Monday.
