Eros, Star TV ink film content licensing deal

Indian media and entertainment firm Eros International said it has signed a multi-film content licensing deal with Rupert Murdoch-led Star TV to tap the booming television sector in India.

LONDON: Indian media and entertainment firm Eros International on Monday said it has signed a multi-film content licensing deal with Rupert Murdoch-led Star TV to tap the booming television sector in India.
    
However, the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
    
In a regulatory filing here, Eros said the deal encompasses a selection of catalogue films from its content library of over 1,900 titles.
    
"It gives us immense pleasure to associate ourselves with a globally acclaimed studio of Hindi Cinema, Eros International. For us it's a commencement of a long lasting relationship which we would like to extend with the licensing of many more blockbusters going forward," Star India Pvt Ltd Senior Vice-President, Strategic Planning & Commercial, Sameer Rao said.
    
According to global auditing and consulting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the television sector in India is projected to be worth USD 15 billion by 2012. The industry is growing at a CAGR of 22 per cent.
    
Star broadcasts over 60 television services in 10 languages in Asia. The company's channels in India include Star Plus, Star One, Star Utsav, Star Gold and Star News.     

Commenting on the deal, Pranab Kapadia, President (Distribution) of Eros International said: "This is just the beginning of a great relationship between Eros and Star, which are both leading players in the Indian entertainment domain.     

"With over 50 per cent of programming content of Indian television networks being film-based, Eros expects to see significant growth in TV syndication," he added.
    
Eros International recently announced a series of major television syndication deals, too, with Sony Entertainment Television and Sahara Television.
