NEW DELHI: In a major show of strength, Delhi units of BJP and Congress will hold rallies in the national capital on Sunday to outsmart each other on various issues including the regularisation of unauthorised colonies.

BJP is organising a rally at Ramlila Maidan protesting against the Delhi government's move of regularising unauthorised colonies.

Senior Party leaders like L K Advani, Rajnath Singh, V K Malhotra, Harshvardhan are participating in the rally, organised by the party leader Vijay Goel.

Delhi congress MLA Mukesh Sharma is organising a Mahapanchayat at the Jantar Mantar to explain the people about the party's move to help the people living in the unauthorised colonies.

"We are holding a Mahapanchayat to explain people about the dubious nature of the BJP on several issues like that of unauthorised colonies. People in thousand will join us," Sharma, who is organising the Mahapanchayat said.

Joined by DPCC chief Jaiprakash Aggarwal, MP Sajjan Kumar among others, the Mahapanchayat will begin at 10 am and will also count on "good rule" of the Congress party during its ten-year rule in the capital.

"Works for providing basic facilities like water, electricity and concrete roads have been started in these colonies. BJP's statement that our move is a political plank is not right as from Indira Gandhi's time we are working for the poor people living in such colonies," he said.

Sharma, who is also the convenor of the Delhi Pradesh Unauthorised Colonies Samiti, said recently the party could not take any step on the matter as it was pending in the court.

Bahujan Samaj Party is also planning for a rally in Chhatarpur of South Delhi where local leaders will address the people.

"Folk singers from Uttar Pradesh will perform at the function and inform people about the achievements and the good rule of the Mayawati government in the neighbouring state," a BSP leader said.

Delhi BJP president Harshvardhan said, "the central and Delhi governments should desist from misleading the poor. The government which could not provide concrete houses to even a single JJ dweller during the past ten years cannot return in power on the false promises."

The votes of people from the unauthorised colonies and JJ colonies hold the key for the parties in the capital because of their large size.
